How to Flush Your Marietta Water Heater Yourself

Flushing your water heater once a year removes sediment that accumulates at the bottom of the tank and affects efficiency. Here’s how to do it:

1. Cut power to the unit: For electric heaters, switch off the breaker. For gas models, turn the control valve to “pilot.” Then shut off the cold water supply valve at the top of the tank.
2. Connect a hose to the drain valve: Thread a garden hose onto the drain valve at the base of the unit. Run the other end to a floor drain or outdoors, somewhere the hot water can safely discharge.
3. Open the drain valve and allow air into the tank: Open the drain valve to start the flow. To help water drain more quickly, open a hot water faucet elsewhere in the house. This equalizes pressure and speeds up the process.
4. Flush out the sediment: Once the tank is empty, briefly turn the cold water supply back on. Let it run through the tank and out the hose until the water runs clear. Repeat if needed.
5. Refill and restart: Close the drain valve, disconnect the hose, and reopen the cold water supply to refill the tank. Once full, restore power. For gas units, return the valve to its normal operating position. Check for leaks before walking away.

Flushing is a solid DIY maintenance task, but it’s only one piece of the picture. Checking and replacing the anode rod, inspecting the pressure relief valve, and evaluating the overall condition of the unit require a bit more expertise. That’s where we come in.
