Why Your Toilet Won’t Stop Running

But this doesn’t always happen. A common issue with toilets is having the flush go on forever. The toilet constantly sounds like it’s running and you hear the endless stream of water flowing. Luckily, this common issue has a few simple fixes that any homeowner can handle. Follow these tips when you notice your toilet running.
Too Much Water
A common reason for a running toilet is too much water in the tank. If the water level in the tank is too high, it will overflow and drip down the built-in mechanism meant for dealing with overflow: the overflow tube. This prevents the toilet from recognizing that the tank has been replenished with water and that it can shut off, leaving it running.
To fix this, try lowering the float inside the tank to a lower point. It may take a few tries to get it right. You also don’t want it to be too low, as that will cause an inadequate flush without enough water power.
Broken/Misplaced Flapper
The flapper is also crucial in maintaining a correct flush and preventing the toilet from running constantly. The flapper releases water from the tank into the bowl upon flushing, then closes. If the flapper can’t close completely, water will continue to flow into the bowl, never filling the tank and causing the toilet to run.
Make sure the flapper closes completely and that the chain is not too tight. Try loosening the chain, and if that doesn’t help, replacing the flapper may be the answer.
