The Parts of a Toilet
If you’re like most homeowners, you probably don’t give much thought to the plumbing behind your toilet. But did you know that several components make up a toilet?
In this post, we’ll look at the different parts of a toilet bowl and how they fit together.
The Tank
There are a few parts that come together inside your toilet tank to allow it to function. These include the following:
- Flapper: This is the rubber flap that covers the tank’s opening and prevents water from flowing back into it. When you flush the toilet, the flapper opens, releasing the water and causing the toilet to flush.
- Chain: This is the chain that attaches to the flapper and pulls it open when you flush the toilet.
- Arm: This lifts the flapper and releases the water into the bowl.
- Float: The float is a small plastic or metal ball that rises and falls with the level of water in the tank. When the water reaches a certain level, it shuts off the water flow into the tank.
- Valve: The valve is the mechanism that allows water to flow in and out of the tank. The float controls it.
The Bowl
The bowl is the section of the toilet that holds the water and waste. It is typically made from vitreous china, a type of ceramic that is very smooth and easy to clean. The bowl has a number of different parts, including:
- Siphon: The siphon is a tube that carries the waste from the bowl to the drain.
- Flange: The flange is a ring that attaches the toilet to the plumbing pipe.
- Wax ring: The wax ring creates a seal between the toilet and the flange.
- Toilet seat: The toilet seat is the part of the toilet that you sit on. It is typically made from plastic or wood.
